About Itara.LikeThis™
Itara.LikeThis™ is a Garifuna AI language and culture platform published at Itara.live. It is a small, independent effort — not a university programme and not a government body — built so that anyone who wants to learn Garifuna has somewhere to practise every day.
Learn the language. Understand the culture. Honor the ancestors. Teach the next generation. Preserve the future.
Why we build this
The Garifuna language is carried by the Garínagu of Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua and by diaspora families abroad. UNESCO recognised the language, dance and music as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001, and it remains at risk because fewer children learn it at home.
Our aspiration is for Itara to become a genuinely useful daily resource for Garifuna learners and families. We would rather earn that slowly than claim it early.
Cultural stewardship
Language belongs to the people who speak it. Itara publishes teaching material and an archive; it does not claim ownership or authority over Garifuna tradition. Film and photography are published to honour the people in them — if you appear in a clip, or hold rights to material we have used, write to hello@itara.live and we will act on it promptly.
Editorial standards
We say where something comes from
When a phrase, story or historical claim comes from a named source — a community organisation, a published reference, a family — we say so on the page rather than presenting it as anonymous fact.
Cultural material gets a human read
AI assists with drafting and with the Teacher experience, but cultural copy — stories, ceremonial references, historical framing — is reviewed by a person before it is published, and revised when speakers tell us it is wrong.
We keep the spelling communities use
Diacritics and orthography follow Belizean coastal usage (Mábuiga, Seremein, Wagúchagu). Regional variants are noted, not flattened into one 'official' form.
We label AI clearly
Itara Teacher and the synthesized pronunciation audio are described as AI wherever they appear. They are study aids; they are not presented as a native speaker.
We correct in public
Corrections are welcome at hello@itara.live. When a correction lands, we change the page — we do not argue with the people who carry the language.
We do not manufacture proof
No invented reviews, ratings, user counts or endorsements appear anywhere on this site. If we ever publish traction or testimonials, they will be real and attributable.
