How Itara supports you
Itara is designed to make learning Garifuna easier to access through text, audio, voice, visual, and simplified learning options.
This page describes what the app does today — not a certification or a legal compliance claim. If something is hard to use, write to accessibility@itara.live and we will work with you directly.

Change how Itara looks and moves
Every option below takes effect immediately and is remembered on this device. Motion follows your device setting unless you choose otherwise.
Text size base, motion system, contrast standard, reading standard.
These preferences are saved on this device only and stay active as you move around Itara.
Capabilities, one by one
- Supported
Large text
Increase every text size in Itara by 15% or 30% from the accessibility controls.
Type is rem-based, so the text-size choice scales headings, body copy and buttons together. The setting is stored on your device and applies on the next page you open.
- Partially supported
Screen reader navigation
Semantic headings, landmarks and labelled controls for VoiceOver, NVDA and TalkBack.
Pages use one main heading, landmark regions and accessible names on icon-only buttons. Live regions announce teacher replies, pronunciation scores and the accessibility controls. The immersive scroll story and the film pages are still being annotated.
- Partially supported
Voice interaction
Speak to the Itara teacher and to Traffico, and record yourself in the studio.
Voice input uses your browser's speech recognition and microphone, which is available in Chrome-based and Safari browsers but not everywhere. Every voice action also has a typed or tapped equivalent.
- Partially supported
Captions
Caption tracks and a downloadable transcript for the Living Archive films.
The films on the homepage and the Watch page ship WebVTT caption tracks with a captions toggle and transcript download. Short ambient background loops carry no speech and therefore no captions.
- Supported
Audio learning
Hear pronunciation for dictionary entries, phrases and the daily word.
Words and phrases can be played aloud, preferring human recordings from the community when one exists. Traffico can also read its answers aloud.
- Planned
Audio descriptions
A spoken description track for the documentary films.
The Living Archive films currently have captions and transcripts but no described-audio track. Recording descriptions with the community is planned.
- Planned
Garifuna interface labels
Switching the whole interface — buttons, menus, settings — into Garifuna.
Learning content is already bilingual. Translating the interface itself is planned and will be done with community review rather than machine translation.
- Supported
High contrast
Turn on a high-contrast presentation that strengthens text, borders and focus rings.
High contrast raises foreground contrast, removes translucent glass tints behind text and thickens borders, in both the dark and light themes.
- Supported
Reduced motion
Stop ambient drift, parallax and autoplaying motion across the app.
Itara follows your device's reduce-motion setting automatically, and you can override it either way in the accessibility controls.
- Partially supported
Keyboard navigation
Operate navigation, menus, players and forms without a mouse.
The header, menu, footer, accessibility panel and forms are fully keyboard operable, and menus trap focus while open and close on Escape. A few media-heavy pages still have long tab sequences we are shortening.
- Supported
Visible focus indicators
A gold focus ring marks whatever the keyboard is currently on.
Interactive elements share one focus-visible ring with an offset so it stays readable on glass, photography and video backgrounds.
- Supported
Information without colour
Status is written in words and marked with icons, never colour alone.
Progress, errors and the statuses on this page all carry text and an icon in addition to any colour.
- Supported
Simple, readable presentation
A readable mode that widens spacing and calms decorative effects.
Readable mode increases line height and letter spacing, and reduces translucency and blur behind text. Lesson copy is written in plain language with short sentences.
- Partially supported
Garifuna and English
Garifuna words with English meanings, pronunciation guides and cultural notes.
Learning content is bilingual: every Garifuna entry carries an English meaning and a pronunciation guide. The surrounding interface labels are currently English only.
