How to pronounce Garifuna

Most learners can read Garifuna long before they are comfortable saying it out loud. This page is about closing that gap.

The sounds that trip people up

Start with these three and most words become readable.

  • ü — a tight, central vowel with no English twin. Round your lips slightly less than for 'oo' in food: Wügüri (woo-goo-ree).
  • ñ — the Spanish 'ny' sound: Amuñegü (ah-moo-nyeh-goo).
  • Accent marks (á, ú, í) mark where the stress lands: Mábuiga stresses the first syllable, Ayó the last.
