Do these 3 things next
- Weigh or estimate the object, then pick stud, toggle or plastic anchor.
- Find the stud first — an anchor is the fallback, not the default.
- Hang it and tug down hard before you trust it.

Steps
- Identify the wall: drywall sounds hollow, plaster sounds dull, masonry sounds solid.
- Find a stud first — anything over 20 pounds should hit framing whenever possible.
- No stud? Use a toggle bolt for heavy loads and a self-drilling anchor for light ones. Plastic cone anchors hold almost nothing.
- Pre-drill to the anchor's exact bit size — oversized holes are why things fall.
- Hang, then pull down hard with your own weight before trusting it.
When to call a professional
Any job
Nothing here says you can't do it. These are simply the moments where a professional is the cheaper answer.
- The same problem comes back after a correct repair.
- The next step needs a tool or permit you don't have.
- You'd be working alone on something that could pin or fall.
- You've lost confidence — that feeling is information, not failure.
General guidance only. Local codes and conditions vary. If work involves electrical, gas, structural, HVAC or plumbing systems — or if anything feels beyond your comfort — stop and hire a licensed professional.
