Do these 3 things next

  1. Measure the hole — under 6 inches means a mesh patch, larger means a backer.
  2. Spread the first coat thin and wider than the patch.
  3. Sand lightly between coats instead of piling mud on.

Steps

  1. Square up the hole with a utility knife so the patch has clean edges.
  2. Press a self-adhesive mesh patch over it, or cut a drywall plug and back it with a scrap furring strip.
  3. Skim a thin coat of joint compound wider than the patch. Let it dry.
  4. Second coat wider still, third coat wider again, sanding lightly between coats.
  5. Prime before painting or the patch will flash through the color.

When to call a professional

Any job

Nothing here says you can't do it. These are simply the moments where a professional is the cheaper answer.

  • The same problem comes back after a correct repair.
  • The next step needs a tool or permit you don't have.
  • You'd be working alone on something that could pin or fall.
  • You've lost confidence — that feeling is information, not failure.
