Steps

  1. Unplug or switch off whatever was running when the power died.
  2. At the panel, find the breaker sitting between on and off, or not fully on.
  3. Push it firmly all the way to off first, then back to on. Half-throws don't reset it.
  4. Plug devices back in one at a time to find the load that caused it.
  5. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and stop.

When to call a professional

Electrical work

Most of this is yours to do. Call someone licensed if any one of these is true — it's a judgement call, not a defeat.

  • The breaker trips again after you reset it once.
  • You see scorch marks, melted plastic, or smell burning.
  • The wiring is cloth-covered, aluminum, or has no ground.
  • The work is inside the main panel or the meter.
